Lush Cosmetics’ “Imperialis” facial moisturizer is my first choice for daily post-wash moisturizing. I’ve tried many other drugstore products that just didn’t seem to cut it, and while I don’t find this particular moisturizer to be outstanding, I do find it considerably more pleasant to use than drugstore brands. It’s light and gentle, but does the job, and seems versatile enough for use on many skin types. It balances my dry-combination skin nicely, soaks in quickly, and keeps my face feeling fresh all day long.
The moisturizer comes in one of the classic small Lush “pots.” This makes it easy to access the product quickly and choose precisely how much product you want, as opposed to a pump bottle. The packaging is less wasteful than many other moisturizers’, and can either be reused when empty or cleaned and returned to Lush as part of their “5 clean, empty pots for a free Fresh Face Mask” deal. My biggest complaint is that this packaging can be somewhat messy, especially if the pot isn’t stored flat, as the product will build up on the lid and around the edges. The easiest fix for this is to try to store the pot flat, or scrape off any residual product on the lid or edges and use immediately or return to the jar.
This moisturizer is very easy to apply, as it is not very thick. I simply scoop out the amount I want to use (usually about the size of small bean), rub it between my palms, and apply all over my face, chin, and upper neck. I appreciate that I can choose exactly how much I want to use since there is no pump that dispenses a predetermined amount, although I sometimes take a little more than I really need. It soaks in very quickly and doesn’t leave a greasy feeling on my face or on my hands.
Daily Longevity (How many hours will this product be effective?)
I apply this moisturizer after I wash my face in the shower, which is usually in the morning. It always lasts until my next shower! Even though my skin tends to be on the dryer side, I don’t find myself applying it more than once between washes or in a 24 hour period. I’ve used other moisturizers where I’ve felt like I had to reapply several times a day to particularly dry areas, but this moisturizer seems to balance out my skin very well.
Product Longevity (How many uses will this product last?)
I first used this product when I was given a free sample from one of the lovely ladies at my local Lush. The sample lasted me about two weeks, and was only a small fraction of what you receive in the full size pot. A full pot typically lasts me about 2-3 months.
At $24.95 for a 1.5oz pot, this moisturizer is not cheap. However, I have managed to spend $15-20 on drugstore products before, which isn’t much cheaper. Considering how long it lasts and how well it seems to work for me, the price is doable.
The product is a light, soft pink color, but this doesn’t transfer to your skin at all, which is what I want in a moisturizer! Unless it’s tinted for makeup purposes, the color of my moisturizer shouldn’t show up on my skin. Surprisingly, this has been a huge problem for me before with other “redness canceling” moisturizers that are green in color and leave a greenish residue in places it shouldn’t, so I’m very glad I don’t have that problem with this one.
This moisturizer has a light floral scent that is quite refreshing on your face. It’s not heavily perfumed, and the fragrance comes from the natural ingredients inside, such as lavender, orange blossom, and tiger lily. The smell of Lush products tends to be a very personal experience though, so I suggest smelling the product in-store to make sure it’s something you would be comfortable with having on your face.
Who is this product for? What are its best uses?
I highly recommend this moisturizer for people with combination skin. The wide range of ingredients help to balance out a variety of skin issues and is gentle enough for those with sensitive skin. It’s best use is for daily moisturizing, especially immediately after a drying cleanse, or for use as needed for those with dryer skin.
Another huge plus for this moisturizer is true of most Lush products in general. Lush has a strong base in ethical cosmetics, and none of their products are tested on animals. The pots are reusable or redeemable for a free Fresh Face Mask (when you bring in 5 clean, empty pots), and the ingredients are all natural. It even includes fair trade ingredients! When you consider these factors, the extra $5-10 dollars doesn’t seem so bad.
This is an excellent moisturizer for daily use on fickle-skinned folks for not much more than most drugstore products. It’s available for purchase online or at a US Lush location. If possible, I recommend trying the product in-store and requesting a free sample before purchasing the product to be sure it’s compatible with your skin and tastes.
